Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Heart Research Australia?
A: Heart Research Australia is a not-for-profit foundation that raises funds for research into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Our goal is to reduce the devastating impact of cardiovascular disease on the community.

Q: How long has Heart Research Australia been raising money for cardiovascular research?
A: Heart Research Australia, formerly known as the North Shore Heart Research Foundation, was established in 1986 by group of cardiologists based at the Royal North Shore Hospital who were concerned about the alarming rise in deaths due to heart disease. Twenty Eight years later, the Foundation has invested over $20 million in cardiovascular research and transformed the Department of Cardiology into a centre of research excellence.

Q: Why did you change your name?
A: For some time we have thought that North Shore Heart Research Foundation was not a true representation of the activities being conducted by us to support heart research. The work being undertaken is not limited to benefiting people just on the North Shore of Sydney, it reaches all Australians. We consider that ‘Heart Research Australia’ defines the organisation in three simple words. In order to save more lives we needed to grow and we consider that connecting with Australians right across the country is the right way to increase our family of supporters.

Q: How is Heart Research Australia different from other organisations that also support heart disease research?
A: Heart Research Australia is a fundraising organisation which receives no government funding. We raise 100% of donations from private sources for research into the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Our primary focus is to provide funding for ‘first-stage’ research, to enable researchers to develop their initial research hypothesis to the point where it is able to attract the significant funding required for clinical trials from organisations such as the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Q: What are your connections with other heart research organisations?
A: Heart Research Australia is a member of the NSW Cardiovascular Research Network (CVRN), which was established by the Heart Foundation in 2005 and is one of 21 organisations, including universities and other such bodies, that work to drive collaboration into heart disease research.

Q: How does Heart Research Australia raise funds?
A: Heart Research Australia raises money via direct mail appeals, as well as receiving general donations from members of the public and businesses, grants from a variety of Trusts & Foundations and bequests. Heart Research Australia also conducts a multi-state raffle.

Q: Who conducts the raffle?
A: Contact Centres Australia (CCA) is a national call centre which manages fundraising campaigns for a number of leading Australian charities. CCA currently administers the I Love Life raffle campaign on behalf of Heart Research Australia. You can find out more about CCA here: www.contactcentres.com.au
